What Are Headlice?
Headlice are a type of insect that live in human hair. They are greyish brown (and therefore well camoflaged in most hair) and live on the scalp and neck. They feed by biting the scalp.
Their eggs are called nits and appear white when empty after hatching. Nits look like dandruff but are stuck firmly to the hairs and cannot easily be removed by light brushing alone.

Who Gets Headlice and How?
Head lice cannot fly or jump and are spread by direct hair to hair contact. They cannot live for long away from the head and are therefore not usually spread by sharing of hats, bedding or clothing.
The are most prevalent in children aged 4 to 11 but can occur in anyone's hair. They do not have a preference for clean or dirty hair and having headlice is not a sign of uncleanliness.
